Explore the story behind an 1860s duel on a guided walk through historic downtown Springfield.
On July 21, 1861, James "Wild Bill" Hickok shot and killed Davis Tutt on the Springfield square, in what some historians consider the first one-on-one shootout in American history. Join Local History staff members, Brian Grubbs and Brandon Broughton, for a walking tour of the key locations of the shootout on the Springfield square and learn about this iconic moment in Springfield history. Each 45-minute tour is limited to 20 participants and will required walking and standing. All participants must sign a waiver upon arrival. The Park Central Branch Library, an arts- and media-themed non-traditional facility, features a small collection of popular fiction and nonfiction books on face-out shelving, a wide selection of local and national newspapers and magazines and DVDs, CDs and audiobooks. More than a dozen computer stations provide downtown patrons with high-speed access to the Internet and the Library's catalog and research databases.
